Activated Carbon Filter Calculation

Activated carbon filter is commonly used for the removing organic constituents and residual disinfectants in feed water. It protects other water treatment units from possible damage due to oxidation or organic fouling.

This tool is useful in determining the quantity of activated carbon and diameter of the filter vessel.

Note:

  1. Density of Acivated Carbon varies in between 300-500 kg/m3, in this calculation 500 kg/m3 is taken.
  2. Most organics are less soluble and adsorbed at lower pH. Increase the size of carbon bed by 20% for every pH unit above neutral (7.0)
  3. Minimum filtration bed depth - 1 meter
